Wow! My mind is reeling from the cuteness. I am completely enamored with this style.

Is that DVD site in Japanese?

Does anybody know what happens if you buy a DVD from Japan? Does it play on anything? What about on a computer??

Do not judge by this screenshot. This alligator looks actually very cute and behaves really well, it's the old lady who is wicked. Just check the film for yourself :) I grew up with these animation. It became a part of Russian folklore in the 80-s. It's kind of funny to see mentioned it on this site.

If you live in the UK, most DVD players are multi-region now, if you live in the US, you're not so lucky.

Region 3 should play on most computers.

I think some of these animations have been released in the States, at least the Cheburashka series has:

We were looking at this very Mittens DVD in a toy shop in Ginza just a couple of weeks ago. And the Cheburaska ones [at least four of them!!] in Tower Records! However the price of new DVDs in Japan is insane, plus they were all in japanese with no english subtitle/soundtrack for obvious reasons. So I didn't buy any of them.

jasonc, Japanese DVDs are Region 2, Hong Kong and Korea generally Region 3. Your computer will play them just fine if it isn't software locked. If you have a Macintosh computer it will allow you to select the region for a disc six times before it locks onto last region chosen.
AmazonUS is selling some very cheap multi region DVD players anyway so that might be a better option for you.
