Article.
Before achieving fame through his all conquering children's book & merchandising juggernaut Miffy, Dick Bruna worked as an illustrator and graphic designer at Zwarte Beertjes (Black Bear) Holland's largest publishing house, owned by Bruna's father.
During his time there Bruna designed covers for many famous authors of the day, including Dutch Translations of Richard Gordon, Leslie Charteris, Ian Fleming and Georges Simenon.
Greatly influenced by the graphic design of the De Stijl Movement, and the collage work of Henri Matisse, Bruna's visually witty covers are a masterclass in graphic minimalism.
